Autism in the First Person (2nd Edition)

On November 30, starting at 10:00 a.m., the second edition of “Autism in the First Person” will be held at the Social Services Center in Chiclana (C/ Terral). This event aims to raise awareness and understanding of autism, focusing on the experiences of autistic individuals themselves.

“Nothing about autistics without autistics” is the motto embraced by activist movements for the rights of autistic people, and it is fully welcomed by Educa and the Xul Foundation, organizers of this event. For many years, autism talks and symposiums were dominated by professionals and family members, often without giving a voice to those who know this reality firsthand.

In the past decade, trends have shifted worldwide, including in other cities across our country. In Chiclana, we had the opportunity to experience it firsthand at the first “Autism in the First Person” event held in November 2022. Numerous family members and autistic individuals attended to hear Beatriz de Caralt and Ignacio Pantoja, autistic advocates whose personal stories changed the way many attendees viewed autism.

This time, we aim to continue along this path by broadening the representation of the variety within the Autism Spectrum. We are pleased to have Javier Canto, Laura Jurado, and Íñigo Figueira join us.

Additionally, we believe attendees will benefit from learning about the perspective of professionals involved in diagnosing and working with autistic individuals. Participating in a roundtable discussion will be María José Ramírez (Director of CAIT Alameda), Pedro Chaves (Healthcare Psychologist), Cecilia Hernández (Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist), and Inmaculada Vázquez (Director of Hogares Puerto Real, from Autism Cádiz).

The event is free of charge, and attendance is limited.
